It’s a fair question. With the terms “reglazing,” “refinishing,” “resurfacing,” and “repair” often thrown around simultaneously when discussing bathtub restoration, it’s definitely cause for confusion. Let’s talk about how different each of these processes are and what they mean.

Truth be told, all of these terms can NOT be used interchangeably. While they might sound similar, reglazing is not the same as Refinishing which is: transforming your old tub, tile, shower or sink from chipped, dirty and faded to bright, glossy and new-looking with durability!

Here is an image to help you understand the differences:

What is Tub Reglazing?

Reglazing is a temporary bandaid on a larger problem. Reglazing is a short term solution that won’t last and will leave you frustrated with more work to do. Reglazing downfall are that it Rusts more easily, washes off over time, hides damages instead of fixing them, its harder to clean, it needs annual servicing, and its falsely advertised as never peeling because it simply washes off.

What is Tub Refinishing?

Bathtub & Shower refinishing is the most sought out service in our service line up. We use our own Refresh Ultimate coating system on all refinishing projects. Ultimate is exclusive to us and is a shining example of the things we do to improve our industry. The Ultimate system carries a B5 rating by ASTM. That’s the highest rating offered for coatings in this category! It’s shine and durability are second to none. We even offer a full five year warranty on our refinishing services!

So the main difference between the “bathtub refinishing” and “bathtub reglazing” is that the former refers to  the entire restoration project and the latter refers to the infer quality commercial coating applied by a lot of refinishing companies.

What is Tub Repair?

Again, you could probably use the word “repair” to also refer to the entire restoration process, but if you really want to get technical, the “repairs” could more accurately refer to the fixing of the body of the tub. This might include filling small cracks and chips, buffing out scratches and deep cleaning areas of rust and grime. It’s usually the very first phase of tub restoration. At Refresh, we go above and beyond to repair your surfaces, even big holes!

What is Tub Resurfacing?

Like “refinishing,” tub resurfacing could also easily be a term used to describe the entire repair and restoration process of reviving an old bathtub. However, it can also be used to indicate the more specific step of correcting the surface of the tub prior to the paint coating. This would include the repairs and buffing needed to create a smooth surface.
